What to Buy for a Rabbit

What will you need for a new pet rabbit?

What to Buy for a Rabbit

What to buy for a rabbit ? . A pet rabbit needs an enclosure, usually an X-Pen, if it will live in the house if not a saddlery or a cage with all the necessary tools, cleaning tools for the cage and grooming supplies for the rabbit and finally a first aid kit.

The rabbit’s cage must be equipped  : with a hay rack above a large litter box a water container and two others a smaller one for pellets and a larger one for plants an absorbent mat on the floor a bed a shelter and lots of toys to chew and occupy themselves so that your rabbit avoids stress and its unfortunate consequences.

Your rabbit will also have to be installed in the most adapted corner of your house and that’s why I encourage you to read this article on having a rabbit as a pet

Concerning the rabbit’s food, I also put you links to what rabbits eat and what they love the most as treats too.

Here is the list of everything a rabbit will need:

1-The X Pen cage enclosure 3 or 4 foot tall

You are not going to let your rabbit, from its first day to run and go where it wants and everywhere in the house, that’s why I recommend you a pen exercise, a kind of enclosure generally used for puppies.

I am against the confinement of rabbits in cages, cramped, like a prison in fact, I am an adept of free-roaming, but do not soak poas, the pen is still necessary, especially when you leave your rabbit alone at home, without forgetting that you must train him before giving him free access to the whole house, training as the litterbox training, I mean

You can find them in a dog section at walmart or on Amazon

Here are the ones I recommend, the first one is lower than the second one, this will actually depend on the size and breed of your rabbit:

1-KOUSI Small Animal Pen Indoor Fence Animal Pen Plastic Fence Rabbit Pen Small Pet Playpen .

2- higher enclosure

Get this X-pen , 36 inches  height if your rabbit is a big one ( large breed)

2- The litter box

Your rabbit will need a litter box, you will install it just below the hutch, because rabbits usually eat and relieve themselves in the same area.

You will also need another litterbox that you will install outside the pen, you will teach your rabbit to use it when you release him for his play times

I recommend the special cat litterbox, it is quite large and is the best for rabbits, I do not know about the color, but you will have the choice, I think

You can find good ones at Menards or just follow the links bellow and get it from Chewy or Amazon

Here’s the one I recommend Van Ness High Sides Cat Litter Pan, Blue

3-Woodstove pellets inside the litterbox better to neutralize odors ; great odor control

woodstove pellets litterbox pellets for rabbits

The litterbox must be lined with litter, not sand and especially not wood chips, I talked about litter for rabbits and guinea pigs in this article but for the moment, I recommend these pellets, they are the best to not only absorb the urine of your rabbit, but especially to retain the bad smells and prevent them from stinking in the whole room!

It’s the same kind of litter that I recommend for cats too, here is the link to Amazon

4-Hay Rack

Your rabbit must have clean hay at all times because he will eat it almost all day long.

That’s why he needs a hay rack, to keep this hay on one side far from your rabbit’s paws and its droppings and especially at disposal each time your rabbit will feel a little hunger !

A hay rack is better when it is made of wood and fixed, I chose the best one for you, follow the link, I found it on sale only on Amazon

If you don’t buy this one, at least avoid the ball racks made of wires… rabbits often get their head stuck in this kind of racks.

The best is the free-standing wooden hay rack
